Why so serious? Because it’s the sure way to have fun

“Why so serious?” you asked? Serious about what? About the anime I watched? The answer is not with me. Actually it’s you who have the serious problem here so go ask yourself. Your problem is you think I’m taking things too seriously although you have no idea of how much of a big fan I am, and you judged me based on your mere assumptions. You thought that I take things too seriously just because I think the things you like are craps. You think my seriousness is offensive and that’s why you’re wrong.

By the way, you’re right that I’m indeed taking things seriously, because I know only serious people will be successful in the end. Students passed their exams because they learned and studied seriously. Workers got promoted because they did their jobs seriously. Music bands broke the sales record because they always seriously trying to improve themselves. In my case I can see flaws in the craps you like because I feel they’re important and I put my interest in them. Look, being serious here might have made me a better fan than you because I pay more attention to the things you claimed to be a fan too. I have more focus on it in contrast of you who are laid-back about things you said you have interest in but you dare calling yourself a fan? You know what happen to people who don’t take things seriously? If they’re entertainers they will sure get booed in their performance. If they’re salesmen they won’t be able to sell a thing at all. If they’re athletes they won’t win any medal. You still want to think that being laid-back is the better way to have fun?

Actually it’s the serious people who actually enjoy the world more than laid-back people because they participate in the things they paid their attention to, they immersed themselves in those things and tried to improve them even if they’re not directly involved. They couldn’t fix the flaws by their hands so they spoke/wrote about it. It’s better than doing nothing at all. Serious people, unlike the “unserious” people like you, don’t settle for ignorance, don’t get easily contented by craps and don’t feel happy to be second-rate. Serious people do contribute to the world because I tell you praises and compliments alone won’t make anything better. So does ignoring flaws won’t improve anything either.

[Interpost] What’s love or hate have to do with being open-minded?

Winter anime just started with not-so-warm beginning (pun intended). Well it’s too early to drop anything right now but mind you there are already candidates for my “filtered-out” anime. Don’t blame me when that happens.

I remember last year I tweeted about how I dropped some anime titles of which some of them I’ve watched at least 2 episodes while some others I haven’t watched any episode at all. Most people were fine with knowing me dropping those titles after watching them for only a few episodes. However there were also people who think that’s not enough yet they can’t even tell me “how much is enough“. There were also people bitching about how I should not drop titles that I haven’t even watched yet. They said I should be more open-minded about it.

Excuse me? What does being open-minded have to do with that? Does that implying people who hate something are not open-minded while those who love it are deemed as open-minded? Can anybody tell me this is a joke? How can not loving something has to be seen as not open-minded? Loving or hating something has nothing to do with being open-mind or not dammit! It’s about how you see and think about things, and first impression does play its role too in this case.

Speaking about first impression, it something that we came to a conclusion based on what presented to us on the surface. That’s why it is called “first impression” in the first place. Some might call it “preliminary judgment”. In this case of dropping anime titles, for some people it is enough with only watching the first few episodes while for some others it is enough with not watching at all. And that is what dropping a series is all about. If you need to watch everything until the end then we wouldn’t have something called “dropping a series”.

“Enough” is something subjective. It’s like food. Some people prefer more salt than the other while some other people are enough with not adding salt at all in their food. Who cares about what’s next to come? That’s why I always stressing about the importance of the “first impression”. If it fails to attract people from the beginning then it doesn’t matter even if its ending is fun and sweet.

People who think first impression is not important are hypocrites. If it is not important then why choose a fruit with the skin still nice and intact? Why follow dress codes? Why decorate your house and your car? It’s because it’s all about impression! It applies to anime world too. If the screenshot alone is enough to drive me away from watching it then let it be, regardless how good the story might be. Well, if it’s really good then sooner or later I’d discover it myself either by accident or deliberately. I don’t need you to bother about whether I’m missing a good stuff or not. Besides all anime titles out there have their own fans and those fans would of course say this or that anime is good and I don’t need to follow them. This is how I imposed a limit to myself. I love things because I can love them, not because I need to love them. So does I hate things because I can hate them, not because I need to hate them. I don’t need to love or hate based on what people told me to, because nobody need to tell me what I should love or what I should hate.

For me there’s nothing wrong with hating something that you can’t like, as long as it’s in control and doesn’t harm anybody. Now if you ask me it’s not the ‘haters’ who are not open-minded. It’s those who call people ‘haters’ that are actually not open-minded because they can’t accept the fact that not everybody likes what they like.

What I’m in for: Loli
What I hate about it: Engrish
Other noteworthy remarks: Rie Kugimiya (though she’s only there to voice the supporting “Rejected Character”, blonde twintail

There’s nothing normal about this show. I even had a hard time calling it a slice of life anime. Why? Because one of the main characters is an assassin! (o_O) Imagine, she’s still a loli! It didn’t stop there. She’s an assassin who is afraid of cockroaches, dawgs and ghosts.

A scared assassin is too cute to ignore :P

This anime feels like a mix of Gakuen Alice and Nichijou. There’s also a narrating voice that make it feels a bit like Ookami-san but at least the narration did not overlap the dialogs. I haven’t checked whose voice is that yet though it sounds a lot like Satomi Arai whom narrated Ookami-san. The anime sure gives me some good laughs but I haven’t read the manga. Well I don’t feel the urge to get the manga though.

In her imagination, a ghost looks like Quarterback :P

I hate the Engrish used in this anime that feels like a half-assed attempt to sound like real American. I hope it’s only in this first episode and will vanish by the second one or else I might have to drop this series for real. Although it’s not the characters who used it, it’s still annoying. I’d prefer it better if they used Japanese accent instead of stupidly trying to make themselves sound like American although they failed hard. At least get a real American to do that instead of using some seiyuu who can’t read English without katakana.

Oops! You're trolled :P

Nothing much to shout about here for now as I still need to watch more episodes. I do admit though one of the reasons I watched this is I was curious of what kind of role Kugimiya will play here because AFAIK there’s no tsundere in this anime. At least Sonya is not a tsundere according to my standard.

[Anniversary] Madoka Magica revisited, one year later

まどかマギカ | ちび丸

Exactly one year ago (07/01/2011) the first episode of this anime was aired. Unlike any other mahou shoujo anime before it, this anime is deemed as legendary and being a better “genre deconstruction” than the classic Utena (the one Madoka Magica has always being compared with by classicfags). It feels even better than Gen Urobuchi’s previous work, the Nanoha series because it’s unusual for you to see characters die in a mahou shoujo series, especially when the dead characters are main characters! Usually this only happens in shounen or mecha series like the Gundam franchises but for a mahou shoujo series, this is quite refreshing (and depressing) though it might not the first one to feature this kind of development.

That makes some people to doubt the validity of this anime being a mahou shoujo series, argued that it’s about drama, not about mahou shoujo, though that kind of argument implies that Gundam also is a drama anime, not a mecha anime. Some others even blatantly oppose the ideas (as if to disapprove all kind of genre deconstruction) and prefer to stick to the old “all sparkling” retro style mahou shoujo. I must say those people are the “static-type” where they refuse to move forward and would not accept new things but prefer the good old ways. *Sigh* If only everybody was like them we might still live in caves today.

I’ve observed many reviews on the net but none so far have noticed these flaws. Although I’m a big fan of the series there are a couple of things been bugging me.

You know I’m also a fan of Steins;Gate. In Steins;Gate we saw tempering with the past always have a direct result to the present and the future. In other words altering the past will resulting in creation of a new future. That however seems to be not the case with Madoka Magica. Although Moemura turned back time repeatedly, the result is always the same.

One more thing that irritates me is even after she (Moemura) made up her mind to become stronger, all that she wanted to save and protect is Madoka only. She didn’t care about Mami-San and others although I think she is capable of doing that.

Well I might be doing the same thing too if I was in her shoes (like saving Mami-san alone and let the others die) but from an audience point of view I still think it is unacceptable. There’s nothing more evil than being able to do something helpful but decided not to do it just because you don’t feel like doing it.

No, I’m not really complaining, and I don’t hate Moemura either (and for Madoka’s sake I’m not favoring Mami-san). I love this show the way it is, and I might love it more now than I was last year. That’s why I’ve kept the above criticisms only to myself for one year-long. I wanted to see whether other people also noticed the above or maybe they did but choose not to say it out loud. Maybe it’s not something worth to write about after all. Looking forward to see the continuation (prequel, sequel, spin-off, whatever) and yeah Mami-san is ♥

Why you’d most likely will never see anime reviews here

1. Most of the time I keep my anime to myself . I have a hard time in sharing my views on anime with other people. It’s almost like how a man keep his woman only for himself.

2. I tend to write encyclopedia-like articles for anime reviews. Sometimes they might sound too technical (not necessarily turning anime talk into scientific or physics talk but more of sounding academical). In other words, my reviews are boring.

3. I tend to give spoilers. It can’t be helped because I see myself as “always being a few days later” when it comes to updating myself with the latest anime, thus makes me think that by the time I’m watching it, most other people might already watched it a few days ago. After all I don’t mind with spoilers.

4. I tend to write reviews from character’s point-of-view rather than my own. It’s because whenever I watch anime, especially the one that I’m a big fan of, I would feel like I’m one of the characters. This makes my reviews become more character-oriented than being audience-oriented.

5. I’ve had enough of people took offense of whatever I wrote in anime reviews. Yes, some people, especially the fans from a certain anime genre are easily offended when I sound critical towards some elements in anime related to the said genre. There should be no reason to be so defensive though but sometimes it amuses me to see such stupidity :P

6. Not all series or rather not all episodes in a series are worth reviewing. That’s why sometimes I skipped a few episodes when I write a series review. However I may write reviews for filler episodes too if I think they’re worth sharing.

7. Speaking of episodic reviews, I must say I’m bad at episodic reviews. Watching every episode is enough of a commitment, let alone to remember, to process and to write reviews of it. Actually I don’t even mind if I don’t write any review at all because I write them to entertain myself, not for fellow audience.

8. I already have a dedicated anime review blog that is regularly updated and includes anime that I hate too. However I can’t disclose it here since it’s for invited audience only. Trust me, and if I can trust you too then you might be invited.

10. Last but not least, I don’t know how to write good-to-read reviews. I may write ‘good’ reviews but chances are they’re not that good to shout about. Most of the time I write reviews in a way that people might think that I’m actually retelling the story than writing a review.

[12 Days of Anime] Day 11 – You & Me, Yuri & Moe

Original character

I am straight as bone, both inside and outside. I just can’t imagine liking yuri anime. Maybe I could if I tried but I treat both male and female equally even if they’re 2D. That means if I were to like yuri that means in order to be fair to both genders I’d have to like yaoi too, but no, there’s no way I’d do that. The same goes to moe. I see many people today are misguided about the term. The fact is moe is valid for both male and female. However the way anime makers producing anime these days has resulting in fans believing moe is associated only with female. They forgot moe is also valid for non-character/appearance. Moe is also applicable for situations. That said I can’t accept it if the anime exists only for the sole purpose of moe or yuri exhibition. I can only accept it if moe and yuri only present as the element in the anime but not as the main subject.

Actually I’m already quite lenient towards both yuri and moe. Well maybe because of the accident I had in August, where I nearly lost my life that I now no longer hostile towards the above. If you follow my posts anywhere on the net (particularly in Google+) you’d happen to see some girl x girl pics too as well as how I already give +1 to posts containing images from a certain moe anime I used to hate so much. However, just to be on the safe side, I wouldn’t say the hate is completely gone and instead I’d say the hate is still there. It’s something that is born with me. It’s an orientation. Just like how you can’t force a gay to turn straight, you also can’t force me to love something that I hate. And I chose to be vocal on that instead of being silent because this is something that I want to share. If you could tell me “DON’T LIKE IT, DON’T WATCH!” then I can also say if you don’t like what you read here then stop reading any further.

Just so you know my hatred ends there. If I hate a certain anime it doesn’t mean I hate its fans too. Even if you found me hating some fans chances are they are the fans who hate me just because I don’t like what they watch. Now the matter is between you and me. We can coexist and approve each other if both of us choose for it. However coexistence and each others approval would remain a wishful thinking if one of us use the dominant position to tell everybody that it’s a winning position. No it is not. This is not about democracy. Politics does not apply to how anime is being good or bad. The fans have no say in it either. If you rely on fans to judge an anime being good/bad than you’re no different than those stupid reality TV shows that put their bet on the audience in determining the next entertainer.

[12 Days of Anime] Day 10 – My anime design principle

Hatsune Miku

I am not a good artist and neither a good designer. However from a ‘real’ audience point of view, I know honestly what I like and it is not something that what others told me to like or what to hate. If I were to design my own anime characters I’d follow these design principle:

“Design and decoration must seduce, shape, and more importantly, evoke an emotional response.”

That’s it, it must be able to ‘seduce’, something lovely to the eyes, pleasing to look at. Anything that’s opposite to this would be deemed as ugly. How do I measure it? Well for me if the look alone is enough to seduce without the help of the plot/story to support it then it’s won already. I’d take keion for example, where there are cases where people fall in love with the characters even without/before watching the anime. Miku Hatsune, the Vocaloid doesn’t even have a fixed personality to begin with, other than being a 16 year-old girl as touted by the developer/creator, still managed to become a world-class “pop star”. Her derivative, known as Black Rock Shooter is also doing very well. Not to mention the female characters from the bullet-hell shooting game Touhou Project (all of them) also have thousands of fans worldwide. If you ask me to show the example of “ugly” character then I have not much to say as I normally don’t watch/follow what I hate. After all isn’t that what fans have always told the ‘haters’? I mean the popular saying “If you don’t like it, don’t watch!” However stumbling upon hateable stuff in inevitable or impossible. That said, I hate the design of Panty & Stocking (the anime). In fact I think most people like it because it has the anime to support the design. I don’t think the some people who love it now would love it if it was from some American cartoon that carries different name/title and different story.

Of course design alone is not enough if we’re talking about anime in general. That’s why I always insist that anime has to have proper plot/storyline to accompany the characters. After all characters are designed for the sake of the plot, not the other way round, where you could design a character to look like in any way you wanted it to be solely based on the plot given to you but there’s no way telling what kind of plot from a character design alone. This is what I meant by “emotional response”. For me the genuine emotional response can only be triggered by the story. It doesn’t matter how bad the drawing is. It also doesn’t matter how bad the animation is. If it is enough to evoke an emotional response in you than it already won half of the battle. I maybe biased in this and I could be wrong too but again the one who is being entertained here is me and this is why how the character look and in what story they’re in is important to me. Otherwise I would not find them that entertaining. For any anime to entertain me, it has to do the above without fail. With that said, I do admit that my No. 1 favorite character, Mami-san (and the rest of Madoka Magica characters) is badly drawn and I even criticized it in my post here. Also I never liked SHAFT anime studio to begin with but the story and my emotional response towards it saved Madoka Magica from being dropped/hated in my watchlist. Yes I am extremely picky but regardless how picky I am it doesn’t concern anybody.

[12 Days of Anime] Day 5 – We Don’t Have Many Friends (BokuTomo ep .12 finale)

Yozora only gets sexier with that short haircut (>_<)

The anime is finally over, but my love towards it will just continue. BokuTomo ended with the mix of good laughs, touching scenes and of course a few moe moments too.  It may not ended in the way I wished it would be (for it to take the romance path) but this is something I’ve expected. However this is also a good thing as this could be a hint that the second season might follow soon. And I really hope the second season will become real as I really want to see the conclusion between Kodaka and those girls so bad!

Yozora's teary eyes, this will definitely become one of the most memorable scenes to me (^_^)

I personally think Yozora with short hair seems more feminine than she was. In this episode not only the voice acting sounded a bit more ‘girlish’, she also acted like a girl whom just met her long-lost boyfriend. Yes, Yozora also have that part in her and I like how she blushes so many times in the first half of the episode. The funnies part in this episode is when their fellow classmates misunderstood the reason Yozora cut her hair when she was explaining it to Kodaka. For a moment it made me feel like how I wish I was there in the class :P

Yozora's unforgettable expression, it's as if she's just heard a love confession from Kodaka (^_^)

After we had a very touching moments of the ‘real’ reunion of Yozora and Kodaka, we’re presented with scenes for good laughs. First we had the ‘Mad Scientist’ mistook Yozora as a random hunk (and consequently had ‘orgasm’ from the thoughts of it). Even Yukimura also fell to Yozora’s “trap” appearance. The only person who knew right away it was Yozora is ironically Yozora’s ‘enemy’ none other than Niku. Niku found this as something ‘trollable’ and even made some funny assumptions for the reason Yozora cut her hair but of course Yozora is the better troll than her :P

'Meat' is making fun of Yozora, only to get trolled back before she could finish laughing :P

If the ep. 09 was “Sena’s episode” then this episode is Yozora’s. In fact I think this is the first time Yozora being the center of the episode. Everything about Yozora’s and Kodaka’s shared past is now clear. Yozora may appear to be stubborn sometimes but in this episode I started to see some of her reasoning behind it. Kodaka also has learned to accept Yozora as she is.

This is the best! Loli Yozora from 10 years ago who was too shy to tell Kodaka that she's actually a girl (^_^)

BTW if we recall all the previous episodes, I must say episodes 01-10 are ‘funny’ episodes, ep. 11 is an emotionally touching episode while this final episode combines both funny and touching moments. I think those moments arrived just at the right place and didn’t feel awkward at all. This is one of the anime I hardly get bored of even after repeating it many times. Maybe not the best for everybody but definitely one of the best for me. We had some depressing moments with Madoka Magica and Steins;Gate earlier this year so having finished this anime right before the new year is right at its time as well as a good way to end the year.

Nendoroid Mikazuki Yozora

I'm hoping to see you again next time! (^_^)

[12 Days of Anime] Day 4 – Music in anime

When it comes to audio entertainment I’m always go to anime first. While most people would use the radio (both online or “offline”/on-air radio) for music discovery, I use anime instead. I treat anime like a music discovery tool in a similar way people treat the radio. It is because to me music discovered from anime is like music of “the chosen one”. There must be something special about it that it became the OP/ED/BGM of an anime. In other words, listening to anime music is like listening to something of special value, a value that is usually missing from randomly discovered music in radio.
Anime maybe my default music discovery tool but it is not the only one. There are at least 3 other sources for my music, namely games (eroge/visual novel included), Jdrama and not to forget doujin music circles. That said if I were to make a ranking anime has always be at the top, followed by the rest. I hardly take recommendations because I can’t simply accept it. For me music has to be good not only for my ears but also “good” in terms of being used in anime.
So how did some music that didn’t come from the above sources ended up in my collection anyway? Well, if you look carefully they are either classics, music from the yesteryear, nostalgic music from my distant past that I’ll always be fond of (like the vintage rock in the 70′s & 80′s). Even if you still managed to find newer/recent non-anime/games/jdrama/doujin music in my collection, again look carefully and you’ll find they’re sung by the same artists who sing for some of the sources above.
Recently anime music has become less interesting to me. I don’t think I’m the one who have changed, it must be the anime. Although I listen to many kinds of music I usually tend to pick Jrock over Jpop, as well as classical orchestra and new age music (that includes Gregorian and Celtic too). I think the most recent “good” orchestra music I’ve heard is “Mini Ika Musume na Hibi” from Ika Musume Season 1 OST. That was years after the last one, which is “Ailes Grise” from the anime Haibane Renmei. I wish more anime could have orchestra music too, at least as the BGM piece if not as the OP/ED.
When it comes to composer though I like Yuki Kajiura‘s works very much. Her works, accompanied by the awesome voices from her “FictionJunction” project and the girl band “Kalafina” really add extra powerful touches to her music. To be honest so far she is the only composer in the world that I like all of her creations. Even for other composers, there’s always at least one of their works that I can’t stand listening for long.
Speaking about my favorite music and the composer, of course it would be unfair without me mentioning my favorite singer/musician too. I like it when Hanazawa-san sings for anime but not all of her song sounds good to my ears. The same also true for my other favorite female artist, KOKIA. She has super awesome voice but I’m not ‘compatible’ with all her songs. That is why I rarely purchase a whole album of any artist. BTW I can’t mention Miku Hatsune here though since her songs and music really depends on the composer behind her, not herself. For musician/band/circle I mostly listen to music from IOSYS, supercell (just to name a few) because of their relationship with anime fandom in general (not necessarily have direct connection to anime but they have some affinity or association with anything anime-ish, including the Touhou Project).
Before I end this let me tell you I don’t stick to a certain artist/genre when it comes to music though I may have a tendency towards classical orchestra music as I’ve mentioned earlier. I only follow the song/music. Therefore if the music sounds good enough to my ears, and it comes from the sources I mentioned above I’d most likely grab it and I don’t care who’s behind it. The only reason I’d care about the artist behind it is to allow me to look for more works from that artist.
