[Not anime] Windows sucks, and so does Linux (Why I’m still using Windows)

guilty-life-time-linux-os-pc-microsoft-bad-fault-irony-fun-u-demotivational-poster-1253382772

I found that both Windows and Linux are equally suck. Neither one of them is better or superior to the other. Because of that then my choice would be based on the users, where the one with nicer users win. In this case I found Windows users are nicer than most Linux users I’ve met offline/online because they have no emotional attachment towards Windows, neither they are loyal. They use it not as a fan but as a user, they don’t think they’re special for using it. Name-calling, flaming, trolling is pretty much non-existent among them when it comes to Windows-related discussion.

Among Windows users they rarely compare Windows with Linux for the sake of saying Linux is bad. They have no reason to do that and they don’t have to. Linux fans usually say “Windows breaks on a frequent basis and it’s Windows’ fault. In Linux when things break it’s your fault”. This is bullshit. Whether the system breaks by itself or we broke it, the point is we’d have to take care of it whenever something broken, regardless it’s Windows or Linux. Linux is no special in that sense. Unless it can fix itself, I don’t think there’s anything in Linux that I can brag about and feel proud of.

Windows sucks is not enough of a reason for me to give it up completely, let alone to switch to Linux. I see Linux is equally sucks so there’s no point in switching to it. Linux may not break by itself (assuming that Windows does break itself that often) but even if it’s our own fault that it breaks it would still as frustrating as in Windows when that happens. My experience in Linux is there is no such thing is everything runs perfectly the first time upon installation. Whether it’s Linux or Windows both would require a certain level of manual configuration at some point. Taylor-made, cookie-cutter system like Mac OS X is an exception but it’s not accessible by the mass.

[Not anime] The surface of the surface (This month in tech)

surface_05

If I were to list down the hottest tech trend in June I’d spontaneously say “Microsoft Surface and Vizio PC”. Yes, both companies that are known for something else has just ventured into a business a bit different from what they used to do before. Microsoft known with their software (mainly Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office) ‘upgraded’ their hardware business by making their own computers while Vizio, know for their LCd TVs are making computers as well.

Microsoft is no stranger when it comes to making their own hardware but all these times it was about making computer peripherals and not a full-fledged PC itself. I have nothing against it because, say what you want but the Surface is beautiful to my eyes, it didn’t fool me into thinking of it as an iPad, and more importantly I’m ready for the Metro UI no matter how suck you think it is. I even used Metro UI on Android phone thanks to some launcher apps for bringing it to Android users.

According to Microsoft, they’re aren’t really happy with some of their partners (OEM PC makers) included crapware in their products which resulting in “bad Windows experience” to the end users. I’m not sure whether this was true or sincere but I could think that Microsoft has always had to allow it or otherwise Windows won’t sell. The truth is Windows sales come mostly from OEM so it’s understandable if Microsoft always tried to keep a good relationship with OEMS all these times.

Now that they are making their own computers Microsoft can have full control in delivering the “Windows experience” to the users as what they intended it to be. With that said they would be facing Apple as another company that is senior in tight OS-hardware integration, something that Apple has done extremely well. Now if only Microsoft could give it a right price and at the same time not locking out DIY-ers I’m pretty sure these Surface tablets would take the world by storm.

So how about Vizio? I must say for the first time in my life that I feel a non-Apple PC maker sporting a PC design comparable to the beauty of Macs, if not better (I personally think they’re WAY better than the half-assed efforts shown by Dell Adamo and the likes back then). Too bad by the time of writing the page for computer in Vizio’s website was down (and I don’t want to use images found outside of their website) so there’s no sample image to be found here.

Before I end this I’d like to announce that Google+, the social network I primarily use now will be having its first anniversary which is just around the corner. I can’t remember the exact date (despite being one of the first few earlier adopters), and despite how awesome it is if compared to Facebook, I must admit that it is still a ****ed-up social network in many aspects. It’s not a failure but if they keep up with their stupid censorship policy then I wouldn’t mind if they’re doomed to fail either.

Dear Google, make this your doodle on G+’s anniversary. Thank you.

By the way sorry for 2 weeks straight without Hyouka review. I’ve explained why I didn’t write one last week but for this week’s episode, despite it was a good watch I found that there wasn’t any scene worth taking snapshots (I’ve always maintained that I need awesome snapshots to help in my reviews). I’m no fan of that smaller-eyed senpai and I’m not a fan of Chitandawg either so I had to give it a pass but I promise I’ll write a review again provided that the next episode has awesome scenes.

All Linux distros should follow the way …

All Linux distros should follow the way of Windows and Mac OS X by default, where applications are installed from a single downloaded file where when double-clicked, bring up an installation wizard program with graphical prompts, rather than the traditional package management systems that many Unix-like systems use.

Oh my goth I really don’t get it. There…

Oh my goth I really don’t get it. There are people who think it’s bad and ‘monopolistic’ for Microsoft to be an all-rounder tech company, say, if they’re making their own hardware (PC) and make Windows exclusively for it. However they would think it’s great or perfectly fine for Apple to be an all-rounder tech company who made Mac OS X vendor-locked with their Macintosh machines only all this time. Isn’t that a bit biased to say Apple can do that while Microsoft can’t? Isn’t it a bit unfair too for Microsoft here? As far as I can remember, the same hate sentiment towards Microsoft also once happened to IBM as well, when they still have the PC division with them. They made OS/2 for their PC platform (which they already lost control on their own platform by that time) and gained the “Big Blue” moniker for trying to be an all-rounder (they’re a long-running company after all). Well, it wasn’t hate until some people came up with the 3B (Big ‘Bad’ Blue), implying that IBM is an evil company.

How often I should have major upgrades f…

How often I should have major upgrades for my OS? Even if there are free annual major upgrades for my system, I won’t be happy either if it involves huge downloads every time that happens. Yes, I’m referring to a certain specific free Linux distro where the company that maintains it promised the user that the major OS upgrades will be available every 6 months or so, more or less. Luckily transferring user preferences and settings in Linux is not as tricky as in Windows because no system registry is involved, which means things won’t be too disastrous even if the upgrades didn’t run smoothly. The worst you’d do is most probably to fresh install the system, recreate your user account and manually patching/transferring all your previous settings to your current installation. But then again it doesn’t change the fact that I hate mandatory huge downloads like system upgrades as I mentioned above. If that’s the case (inevitable huge downloads) I rather getting major upgrades only after every 2 or 3 years than doing it twice or even once every year. I know major upgrades always associated with major security concerns but for something that “as big as an OS”, I think having to do it each year is too much to the point of annoying. Yeah, I might be able to skip it but chances are newer apps might only be optimized for the upgraded system only, rendering most users would feel like being ‘forced’ to do the upgrades. Besides I think annual major upgrades for free OS doesn’t really makes sense since there’s nothing to sell in the first place. At least in Windows world, although only having major upgrades once every 2 years or so, it does makes more sense as those upgrades are something they’re selling, something they (Microsoft) are making money from.

Linux should learn more from Windows too…

Linux should learn more from Windows too; ie. to use proper, corresponding icon for its executable files. Executable files are programs that comes with applications, together with their own set of icons. The problem is the icons are only available for applications menu and desktops but why not the executable files as well? I remember having a hard time browsing the usr/bin folder searching for the executable file of Transmission (the bittorent client) by looking at file names instead of trying to notice the familiar Transmission icon. Yeah I found it but I can do it much faster in Windows thanks to the usage of corresponding icon for Windows applications. Besides in Windows applications are usually sorted out properly in their own program directories with proper application naming (Program Files/App name) instead of dumping all cryptically named executable files in only one place. Besides why the heck the system still use almost-cryptic acronymic naming of directories like ‘usr’ instead of ‘user’ or ‘bin’ instead of ‘binary’ or ‘lib’ instead of ‘library’? (And strangely enough they can use four-letter words for some other directories like ‘home’ and ‘root’?). And what the heck the ‘sda’ is actually? (yeah, I know what ‘sda’ is but that one is just me exaggerating to show you how cryptic directory naming in Linux can be). Linux is already decades in development yet the developers still refuse to abandon UNIX system convention? C’mon, it’s just a matter of a few additional letters so it shouldn’t hurt for that much of extra work. And isn’t modern Linux is supposed to be a hybrid and pragmatic standalone system instead of being heavily and strictly modeled after UNIX? It’s been decades since the first version of Linux being coded so today it should be made less like UNIX now while still remaining POSIX-compliant. Heck, even Mac OS X and Windows NT* are completely POSIX-compliant but managed to exist as a completely different system. In other words, modern Linux should be partially modeled after other systems as well if it wants to ‘seize’ the OS market domination from Windows.

*WinNT may or may not fully POSIX-compliant but I don’t fuss over the details. Nobody really care whether I’m correct or not because there’ll always be people disagreeing with me whether I’m right or wrong.

My Dream House

This is about the home of my dream. Everybody has their own dream home, I mean who doesn’t? People has always dreaming a perfect and ideal home for their life, even if it does not appear to be ‘perfect’ to other people. Perfect here doesn’t have to be 100% because for most people, what they need is a “just enough” home with roof, and rooms, as long as it does provide a shelter for them. Here is mine. Read on.

Borudjerdis’ House (Kashan)

I have three kind of dream houses. The first one is a double-storey detached house with a special design, combination of American and Japanese style. American design being adopted here is the underground water cooling system, the use of insulation layer in the walls (to keep the house cool from the heat of tropical climate here) and the ‘gateless’ frontage, where guests and visitors can go straight to my doorstep instead of ringing the bell from outside of the gate. I feel it’s friendlier that way for them. For the cars, instead of parking them in the car porches, I’ll park them in the garage, just like what the Americans do.

For the Japanese style, I’d like to adopt their distinctive doorway/hallway/corridor style. Unlike the Americans, we Asian does not bring shoes inside the house and leave them at the doorstep. However there’s one thing that separates the Japanese from the rest of other Asians are who leave the shoes outside the house, the Japanese have special place for shoes inside the house, located just behind the main door. That’s what I’m talking about. And I don’t mean to leave our local house design. The kitchen will be made completely separated from the living room, and restrooms will not share the same place with bedrooms.

Speaking about bedrooms, I prefer there to be at least 4 bedrooms to be ideal. The master bedroom for mom and dad, one room for the boys, one room for the girls and another room reserved for the guests. For rest rooms, I’d like to make two sets of them. What I mean by ‘set’ here is one room will be consisted of separate three parts; toilet, bathroom and ‘washroom’. For other cultures, washroom may be the same as toilet but for the local people here it is where we do general washings that is not related to bathing. Last but not least, in a tropical country here, a roof ventilator is a must to complement the underground water cooling system I mentioned earlier.

So where I would like to place the house? I am dreaming of a peaceful neighborhood with friendly neighbors, and I can virtually get everything I want just from a stone-throw away, or at least a walking distance to the stores that can provide me almost everything that I need (from anime, manga, games, computers, software, books, foods, clothes, etc.). It would be better too if it’s within a walking distance from my workplace, and since I’m the online-type person, a free public wifi access is a plus point as well. It may not offer the best quality but it’s free and at least I can stay online most of the time without having to worry about the expensive internet bills.

Here is my dream house number two. It is an apartment in the middle of the city, where I can have a beautiful kaleidoscopic night view of the city from the windows. The apartment doesn’t have to be a luxury one, even a cheap one with just one bedroom (with own kitchen and restroom) for a bachelor like me is enough (I can convert the living room into a bedroom for guests if there’s a need to), or three bedrooms for family people. I’m also fine if it’s just a residential floor in a 3 or 4-storey shophouse unit. Just like my dream house number one above, I’d appreciate it if there’s a free public wifi access so I can cut the expenditure for the internet.

And since it’s in a middle of a city I’d prefer it to be as close as possible to a convenience store. I’d want a 24-hours convenience store too but yeah this kind of store always sell their goods at more expensive price. A shopping complex within a walking distance is a good thing to where I can do window shopping whenever I feel like it. I’ll need a hypermarket nearby too to buy fresh ingredients/foods. Also a restaurant (preferably a 24-hours one), a hardware store and a laundry shop is a must too, because I’ll definitely need them.

Lastly for my dream house number three (the most unrealistic one), it is a small mansion on a parcel of land with an area no less than a football/soccer field. Yes, a piece of land enough to build a medium-sized stadium would be ideal. In the middle of the land there is the 4-storey house building with at least four rooms (for various purposes including bedrooms and workspace) in each floor. There will be numbers of maids and butlers to serve me, and enough bodyguards to keep an eye for my security. I have drivers and cars to take me to virtually any destination I want. In front of the mansion there are gardeners tending to keep the big landscape beautiful all year long. There are also small ponds and fountains at both left and right side of the house. Finally, a private swimming pool behind the house where I can dive in whenever I like or I can just organize a swimsuit party there every weekend.

(9/16 of my guests never know the exact location of my house)
